26.10.2003The Smarts avoid giving details of daughters ordeal
By Dierdre Donahue, USA TODAY
No one can truly understand the agony, uncertainty, terror and pure joy that Ed and Lois Smart experienced after their radiant daughter, Elizabeth, 14, was abducted from their home in the middle of the night in 2002 and was returned nine months later. The parents attempt to describe the ordeal in Bringing Elizabeth Home, written with Laura Morton.
It is difficult to criticize this venture because of the familys pain. But readers would be foolish to buy this book expecting new information.
Ed and Lois Smart, with their daughter Elizabeth, shown on the book cover of their story collection. The Smarts appear to be an admirable couple with six beautiful kids. The photos on the front and back of the book are its most interesting elements. Understandably, the parents want to shield the details of Elizabeths time with Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee. (Both are charged with kidnapping, burglary and sexual assault.) And few, save the prurient, would want to pry into the alleged sexual abuse.
So what do the Smarts write about?
In alternating chapters by Ed and Lois as well as joint chapters, they write about their deep Mormon faith and the spiritual nurturing they find in prayer, fasting and reading Scripture. According to Bringing Elizabeth Home, the kidnapping strengthened the Smarts marriage. Ed discusses being hospitalized for a "mild" nervous breakdown during the ordeal. A blessing from his bishop and prayer healed him, he writes: "The Lord wanted me to be home with my family. ... I got out of the hospital bed, pulled myself together, and went home." Lois describes the difficulty of being stared at while running errands, and Ed details the search. They complain about the intrusiveness of the media and the police, as well as the sleaziness of the tabloids.
And then there is the Smarts assertion that Elizabeths return "is ultimate proof that God answers prayers." But what of the parents whose children were not found alive who prayed just as fervently?
Frankly, the book feels like padded-out magazine article for a Mormon-only audience.
