Betrifft: Spendenfreudige Mormonen?

http://www.sltrib.com/11212001/utah/150851.htm

"Utah Ranks Near Bottom in Charitable Giving

Utahns rank near the bottom of a national survey of charitable giving -- though the report does not take into account donations to churches.
Utah ranks 48th out of 50 states, according to the United Way State of Caring Index released Tuesday. It shows Utahns give just $244 per capita, compared with $623 other Americans donate on average.
"It hasn’t been part of our culture to give to charitable organizations," said Deborah Bayle Nielsen, CEO of the United Way of the Great Salt Lake Area, after a news conference.
Instead, Utahns tend to give to churches, and those donations aren’t counted in the caring index. About 70 percent of Utahns are nominally members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which relies on tithing donations.
While some of that tithing money goes to local charities, Utahns can’t assume churches cover the needs of Utah’s working poor, Nielsen said.
Fred Riley, commissioner of LDS Family Services, agreed. "Despite what the church does as an entity . . . it’s really important for individuals to get involved in charitable giving," he said.
The caring index, based on 1999 data, analyzes 32 indicators, including education, health, volunteerism, safety, natural environment, economics and charitable giving.
According to the index, overall America is a caring nation. More than half of U.S. adults volunteer, though they are spending less time per week than they used to -- 3.5 hours. And annual donations have risen from $289 in 1998 to $623 in 1999.
The state ranks well on most indicators. Compared with the rest of the nation, few Utahns live in poverty or in households run by a single parent.
But as far as donations, the picture is not likely to get better this year..."
