Moore to say
How ironic that Michael Moore has been invited to speak at Utah Valley State College instead of the University of Utah, where free speech and free thinking are encouraged. The true irony is that right-wing Republicans use the âfreedomâ issue daily in support of the never-ending war in Iraq, and yet are threatened by the actual use of freedom of speech, the press, etc.
In a state controlled almost completely by one party and one religion, why is there such fear of a different point of view? Maybe freedom is only supposed to be a slogan for war, as in âFreedom doesnt come free.â Maybe we arent supposed to consider it a right. Maybe there isnt much difference between those we are fighting and ourselves.
I have not seen âFahrenheit 9/11,â yet I take interest in Stan Lockharts comments that âMichael Moore has slandered the president in every way possible and here they are bringing him to speak two weeks before the election. Its regrettable that they use it for political purposesâ (Tribune, Sept. 15).
Really. So, its OK to slander a president if hes a Democrat, but not if hes a Republican? And, in Mormon Republican-dominated Utah, does a visit from Michael Moore or anyone else make any political difference?
