Zuerst die Kurzfassung: âThe Mormons do not indulge in stimulants, like coffee. Brigham Young allowed them to boil the needles of a shrub, which is now known as Mormonâs tea, because it had no caffeine. It was discovered later that it had ephedra, a more stimulanting substance than caffeine.â (Quelle)
Und hier die Erzählversion: â... Mormon Tea. Its called this because Brigham Young told everyone that now that they were in the blessed land of Utah, they were not allowed to have any stimulating beverages, such as coffee or tea. The good Mormons said, "Now, Brigham, its okay that youve brought us out here to the middle of nowhere, but now you want to take away our coffee???? This is going too far." Intuiting that he had overstepped his boundary of safety, Brigham searched for something to appease the twitchy masses, and finally stumbled upon a strange little shrub with green stems and no leaves. He boiled it and it tasted awful. He boiled it down again and it tasted pretty bad. He boiled it down a third time and he managed to choke it down, so he went back to his followers, who were by now very cranky and headachey, and said, "Ive found something for you to drink. Ill call it Mormon Tea." The twitching mob drank it, and while it wasnt good, it soothed their jangled nerves. The plant is known in the scientific community as Ephedra. As in ephedrine. You know, the stimulant thats about twice as powerful as caffeine. Good old Brigham Young.â (Quelle)
