Two Missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, who came to Ghana, on an evangelism mission, have found themselves in a sex scandal after they allegedly defiled a 14-year-old house-girl of a next door neighbor who runs errands for them.
The accused person, Omale Ojonugwnuwa, alias Elder Omale, a Nigerian and Thatayaone Keeng from Botswana, who are evangelizing on behalf of the church popularly called Mormons, were put before an Accra Gender Based Violence Circuit Court where they were charged with conspiracy and three counts of defilement.
They pleaded not guilty to the offence and have been remanded in police custody to appear before the trial judge, Mrs Georgina Mensah-Datsa on June 23 2009.
ASP Sarah Ekua Acquah, the prosecutor, who presented the facts of the case, told the court that the complainant was a dressmaker who lived with the victim as her house-help in Accra.
The accused persons had been sending the victim occasionally to buy them ingredients.
According to the prosecutor on February 1, 2010, the first accused, after calling the victim under the pretext of sending her on an errand, asked her whether she had ever been kissed, to which she responded in the negative.
ASP Acquah said the evangelist then called the girl to his room where he pushed her onto his bed forcibly had sex with her after which the second accused, Keeng, who was in the room while the act went on, also took his turn.
They warned the victim not to disclose the ordeal to her madam otherwise she would be sent back to her village.
On another occasion, on March 10, 2010, there was water shortage so the complainant asked the victim to fetch some water from a polytank in the compound. But the victim could not find the keys to the polytank so she went to the evangelists to collect which she was told was in their possession.
It is alleged that on that occasion too, the accused persons sexually abused the victim but a friend of the complainant who saw the victim entering the accuse persons’ room expressed concern to the complainant.
The prosecutor said the complainant then called the victim and asked her what the evangelists invited her to do in their room.
It was during the interrogation that the victim admitted she had been defiled by the accused persons.
ASP Acquah said the case was reported to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) where a medical form was issued the victim to go for a medical examination.
The test proved her hymen had been broken.
The accused person were subsequently arrested and arraigned after police investigations.
