Betrifft: Die aktuelle Umweltverschmutzung

Wie der Zufall (?) es so will. Bericht in der Deseret News vom heutigen Tag.

Schrieb doch Reinhold u.a.:

"Gunk is hazardous to health (dt. "Klebriges Zeug ist gefährlich für ihre Gesundheit", Hervorhebungen und Übers. jeweils von mir)

S.L., Davis on ’red’ alert; Weber, Utah, Cache on ’yellow’ (dt. "Salt Lake, Davis auf "roten " Alarm, Weber, Utah, Cache auf "gelben.")

That soupy, ugly, icky gunk that has annihilated the blue sky and smothered the valley floors is also filling your lungs with potentially dangerous irritants.

Pollution (Umweltverschmutzung, Verschmutzung) fills the air in downtown Salt Lake City, where a TRAX train travels along 400 South. (Bildunterschrift)

For the first time this winter season, the Utah Department of Environmental Quality declared a "red condition" day for Salt Lake and Davis counties, instructing residents on Saturday to cease wood burning, minimize driving and avoid outdoor exertion. Weber, Utah and Cache counties are on yellow alert, with people being asked to voluntarily comply with the restrictions.
The high pressure over Utah means an inversion is trapping cold air over the valleys, not allowing pollutants to escape.
"The longer the inversion persists, the worst the pollution gets," said department spokeswoman Laura Vernon. "The atmosphere is stagnant, the air isn’t moving and the pollution persists. What we really need to happen is a good snowstorm, some kind of weather activity that will stir up the air and get it moving so it can just hop over the mountain and go away."
But don’t look for that to happen soon.
The grim word from the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City is that a substantial storm isn’t looming anywhere close to us.
"There will be a series of weak storms moving through over the next several days, but none look like they have the potential to clear us out," said meteorologist Mike Conger.
Conger says he expects conditions to remain pretty much the same, with the gunk clinging to the Wasatch Front until a healthy snowstorm decides to visit.
Aside from the inversion’s unattractive haze that looks dismally depressing, the condition poses health risks to certain groups of people.
Young children, the elderly and people with asthma, certain allergies and cardiovascular problems should avoid prolonged exposure to the outdoors, says Royal DeLegge, the Salt Lake Valley Health Department’s director of environmental health.
The inversion creates high particulate levels that act as a lung irritant. The pollutants are so small they breeze past a human’s normal defense system of nasal hairs.
"They are an irritant because they go so deeply into the lungs," he said.
DeLegge says residents are likely to experience an aggravation of an existing condition if they are outdoors and exerting themselves, and they may experience shortness of breath.
"People are advised to not go out and jog or engage in any strenuous activity outdoors."
The "red condition," which is likely to continue for Salt Lake and Davis counties and may spread to other counties along the Wasatch Front, is a reminder of last year’s extended inversion that crept in before New Year’s Eve and lasted well into January.
"We’re not sure how long this one is going to last," DeLegge said. "It is an open question as to when this one will get shoved out."
