Rocky first S.L. mayor to marshal gay parade
By Zack Van Eyck

Rocky Anderson will serve as grand marshal of today’s Utah Pride Day 2001 parade, becoming the first Salt Lake City mayor to do so.
Anderson, who has participated in the parade on two previous occasions, said Saturday he hopes his involvement will serve as a statement that "everybody is welcome in this community and everybody is entitled to respect, dignity and fair treatment regardless of their differences."
"We embrace those differences. They strengthen our community," he said.
The parade begins at 10 a.m. at the northeast corner of Liberty Park, 700 East and 900 South. It will follow 900 South west to 200 East, then proceed north on 200 East to 500 South. The parade will be followed by the Pride Festival, from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the City-County Building.
Some 25,000 people are expected to attend, Pride Day coordinator Kim Russo said.
"I think it’s entirely appropriate and I was honored to be asked" to serve as grand marshal, Anderson said during his "Saturday Morning with the Mayor" chat with residents and the media.
"Gays and lesbians have suffered a tremendous amount of prejudices and biases on account of individuals and communities as a whole, and too often have been pushed to the outside," Anderson said.
"We want to make sure that they, that everybody in this community, regardless of race, religion or sexual orientation, knows they are an integral part of this community and will always be welcomed."
Russo said Anderson was chosen because "he is an individual who embraces all humankind."
Darin Hobbs, assistant director of the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Utah, cheered Anderson’s decision to lead the parade.
"I was not surprised that Rocky accepted," Hobbs said. "As a man of integrity and as an individual who is good to his word, Mayor Anderson made the commitment that his administration would adhere to the policy of inclusion and celebrate the diversity within our community."
City Councilman Carlton Christensen said Anderson has the right to represent causes important to him. "Other than that, I don’t have much of an opinion on it. ... "
