Aus der Deseret News vom 31.05.01 (Auszug, meine Ãœbers.):

"HÃ¶rt den Afrikanern zu, werden Missionare aufgefordert"
...

Regionaler WHO (Welt Gesundheits Organisation) Direktor Dr. Ebrahim Samba (Gambia) besuchte das MTC (Missionarstrainingszentrum der Mormonen in Provo, Utah) um sich ein Bild zu machen (auf eigene Kosten!). Gambia besuchte und sprach mit frisch berufenen Missionaren, die anschlieÃŸend nach Afrika versetzt werden um dort Menschen zum mormonischen Glauben zu bekehren. Dort ermahnte er sie, ihre Aufgabe ernstzunehmen, fragend, warum sie sich freiwillig melden. Um das Evangelium zu teilen und zu dienen. So die einstimmige Antwort.
Dr. Samba hakt nach: "Und wie werden sie dienen, was werden sie fÃ¼r sie tun?"
Ein "Baby-face-missionar" daraufhin stammelnd: "Ã„h ... das wissen wir nicht genau - noch nicht."
Ruhe im Saal. Samba lacht sich eins und geht auf die NaivitÃ¤t der Missionare ein, die Missionare belehrend:
"... Gehen und hÃ¶ren sie auf das, was sie ihnen sagen, wie sie helfen kÃ¶nnen, anstatt zu versuchen, ihnen zu sagen, was sie benÃ¶tigen."
AnschlieÃŸend verpaÃŸte Samba jedem Missionar einen "bear-hug" (eine heftige Umarmung ob "Sisters" auch dabei waren ?), ermahnte sie das Moskitonetz zu benutzen und ihre Malariapillen einzunehmen.
Samba ist selbst Muslime.

Respekt Dr. Samba, mein Respekt und Hochachtung!!! Starke PersÃ¶nlichkeit. Ob sie es begriffen haben?

Surrounded by a group of young recruits at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, the elder statesman/physician from Gambia urges them to take their new assignments in Africa seriously, then asks why they are volunteering.
To share their gospel and to serve, comes the unanimous response.
"And how will you serve, what will you do for them?" he prods.
"Uh, we don’t know exactly - yet," comes the stammered reply from a baby-face missionary.
Anticipating a possible rebuke, the room is silent.
Then Dr. Ebrahim Samba smiles widely, gesturing with both hands as he affirms their willing naivete. "That is best. You go and listen to what they say you can do to help, instead of trying to tell them what they need." Then he gives each missionary a bear hug, warning them to sleep with a mosquito net and take their pills to avoid contracting malaria.
As regional director of the World Health Organization for Africa, Samba has seen firsthand the toll that malaria, AIDS and tuberculosis have taken on his continent. Because millions of Africans die each year from such preventable diseases, Samba is looking for a wide range of partners: from high-profile people who care enough to use their influence to help ease pain and suffering, to young people who will return from two years in Kenya, Ghana and Madagascar with a love for the people and a desire to do more.
In Salt Lake City and Provo this week to meet with officials of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Samba spent an hour with the church’s Presiding Bishopric, held a private meeting with Brigham Young University President Merrill Bateman and was feted at a dinner hosted by Elder Jeffrey Holland of the church’s Quorum of the Twelve.
As a well-connected black Muslim on a continent where the LDS Church is gaining a foothold, he hopes the relationships he seeks will open doors for further cooperation with a faith known worldwide for taking care of its own - and others. He came, at his own expense, to meet the hierarchy behind Deseret International, a nonprofit humanitarian agency that has already become a key player in Africa’s war on AIDS."
