Starting today, the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints will be known officially as the Community of Christ.
The name change will be reflected in new signs unveiled at a news conference this morning at the church’s Independence, Mo., headquarters, RLDS President W. Grant McMurray said Thursday. Celebrations will continue throughout the day at the church’s headquarters and nearby temple.
McMurray said the move is an attempt to establish the church’s unique identity and clear up continuing confusion with the 11 million-member, Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with which it shares a common history.
"This is not an effort to separate ourselves from our past," McMurray said, noting that today’s announcement was timed to coincide with the 171st anniversary of the church’s founding on April 6, 1830. The RLDS name still will be used for some legal and official work.

To assist in the transition, the church developed a yearlong study program for members that emphasized what the name would mean for the denomination’s future. The program culminated in 40 days of fasting and prayer, which ended Thursday."
