Betrifft: Mormonen essen das meiste Fleisch

Eat meat sparingly

I loved your photo and article about the new billboard by PETA at 279 W. 3900 South depicting God endorsing vegetarianism (Tribune, March 9). I agree that the (LDS) Word of Wisdom does not explicitly condone vegetarianism. However, it does call for eating meat sparingly.
Don’t you find it a tad ironic that Utah leads the nation in fast-food establishments per capita? This is according to a study by the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce. According to James Goodrich of LDS Church Welfare Services, the University of Utah School of Social Work did a study about 20 years ago concerning cancer rates, and one of the findings was that Utahns are among the highest in the nation in meat consumption. Dean Eliason, LDS Church food lab, says that this can be attributed in part to the farming culture found in Utah.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Americans per capita are among the heaviest meat consumers in the world. And the Mormons lead the pack in America. Is that sparing? Are we in the midst of a famine, or winter, in our continuously heated homes and cars? A member can’t get into the temple for one puff of a cigarette, but a vegetarian is hard-pressed to find something to eat in a temple cafeteria or at a church dinner. Go figure.

Billboard: Meat and potatoes of doctrine questioned

No booze. No smokes. No Whoppers.
That’s the "Word of Wisdom" -- if you look to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) for interpretation of LDS scripture.
The animal-rights group put up a colorful billboard at 279 W. 3900 South near Interstate 15 depicting God holding a staff in one hand and a bunch of carrots in the other. The sign quotes Verse 15 from the Doctrine and Covenants’ Section 89 (known as the Word of Wisdom): "And [animals] hath God made for the use of man only in times of famine and excess of hunger." Below the citation, it says: "Go Vegetarian!"
However, Mike Otterson, a spokesman for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said Monday that church members "do not regard Section 89 as a call to vegetarianism."
Nonetheless, PETA spokesman Sean Diener -- a practicing Latter-day Saint -- said the scripture is consistent with verses in the Word of Wisdom that discourage consumption of alcohol, tobacco and hot drinks (coffee and tea).
"This is a unique way to get people’s attention," Diener said. "It is a message to people of faith. It is a straight-forward message that you shouldn’t eat meat."
LDS principles teach kindness toward animals, Diener noted. "Nobody disagrees that torturing cats and dogs is wrong. If you’re eating meat, you’re supporting cruelty to other animals that suffer just as much."
But the late LDS apostle Bruce R. McConkie argued in his landmark book, Mormon Doctrine, that faithful members can eat meat and still comply with the Word of Wisdom. "There is no prohibition . . . on meat or anything else, except items classified under the headings tea, coffee, tobacco and liquor. As a matter of fact, those who command that men should not eat meat are not ordained of God, such counsel being listed by Paul as an evidence of apostasy."
McConkie then quotes 1 Timothy 4:3 from the New Testament. The verse says meat should be "received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth."
Former dairyman-turned-vegetarian Tom Rogers agrees with PETA. A practicing Mormon, Rogers became a vegetarian 13 years ago at age 49 after suffering a heart attack.
The Bountiful resident created a Web site, http://www.LDSVeg.org, as an educational tool for Mormon vegetarians and those considering eliminating meat from their diets. He reads the Doctrine and Covenants to advise against eating meat. "If you take Mormon scripture literally, it’s pretty clear," he said.
