In the mid-1980s, her husband, sealed to her in the Mormon Temple for eternity, defrauded victims ranging from historic document speculators to the man who is now LDS president and prophet, Gordon B. Hinckley. Hofmann created bogus historic letters and documents and, at his peak, hoodwinked investors into buying them for millions. Some of the artificially aged letters called into question the churchs theological underpinnings.
Then second counselor in the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Hinckley paid Hofmann $15,000 for the notorious white salamander letter that painted church founder Joseph Smith as a magic practitioner and treasure hunter.
When Hofmanns convoluted scams began to disintegrate, he tried to divert attention by planting three pipe bombs. The blasts killed two people. Hofmann seriously injured himself with the last bomb for reasons that are still unclear.
